Speech is one of the commonest mode of communication and language is the medium of communicating.

Auditory (Hearing) development begins within the womb of pregnant mother. By the seventh month,the baby starts listening.

An infant, right from birth starts the journey of development of speech, language and communication. Hearing or audition is an important part of development of speech, language and social skills.

There are milestones for hearing and speech/language development from infancy to 5 years.

There can be various causes for speech delay and hearing loss is one of them.

Following are the other pre requisites of language development required to acquire language and communication:

-Sensory abilities: Adequate hearing and vision

-Motor abilities: Speech is a complex motor activity and other ways of communication like writing,gesturing also depend on this.

-Structures: Speech is a complex motor act with use of lips,tongue,palate,larynx and lungs.

-Cognitive skills: The way child responds to the environmental inputs as well as attention,concentration,memory.

-Stimulating Environment: Lot of interaction by parents and caregivers

-Means to communicate: Child should have an opportunity to express his/her thoughts,ideas,needs and feelings
